The side event pointed out that:
- Innovation is the driving force that can transform food systems and lift family farmers out of poverty to help the world achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

El Proyecto Estratégico en Seguridad Alimentaria de la FAO en México opera desde 2003, impulsando acciones y proyectos productivos con la finalidad de mejorar la seguridad alimentaria familiar en regiones con alta marginación en el país. Este estudio evalúa los efectos de la intervención de este programa en localidades indígenas tzotziles de la microrregión cafetalera en la Región Altos de Chiapas en México. Present refrigeration and cold transport technologies typically use either diesel fuel (expensive and a source of pollution) and/or electric power (often not available in rural areas). Promoting the expansion of existing technologies for cold-chain development will have the side effects of increasing pollution, greenhouse gas production and associated climate change. Clean cold-chain development is an environmentally sustainable way to achieve essential cooling and reduction in the post-harvest losses.
Nowadays, there are a number of projects tackling on challenges around which this study is based. For instance, the ultimate goal of the current project SKIN is to create a permanent stakeholders’ association on short food supply chain (SFSC) that works on the joint economic growth of the agricultural sector through the exchange of local food practices and through coaching sessions stimulating innovation. It creates a European network of best practices in SFSC that addresses the fragmentation of knowledge in the agricultural sector and supports bottom-up innovation initiatives.
This paper comparatively analyzes the structure of agricultural policy development networks that connect organizations working on agricultural development, climate change and food security in fourteen smallholder farming communities across East Africa, West Africa and South Asia.
This article presents programmatic lessons on scaling up research for development innovations that were implemented through the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF). Co-funded by the International Development Research Center (IDRC) and Global Affairs Canada (GAC), CIFSRF was a nine-year, two-phased program (2009–2018) that supported applied research to develop, test and scale proven food and nutrition security innovations. The outline of this paper is as follows.
This paper provides a snapshot of the agriculture-nutrition nexus in the region, outlines the pathways through which agriculture can influence nutrition outcomes, elaborates on the objectives of the Leveraging Agriculture for Nutrition in South Asia (LANSA) research consortium within this context, and highlights the core findings of the six papers that form the body of this Special Issue. This study examines whether agroecological farming practices, when employed by highly vulnerable households in sub-Saharan Africa, can improve food security and dietary diversity. The research involved a four-year study with 425 smallholder households, selected purposively based on high levels of food insecurity and/or positive HIV status. The households carried out agroecological experiments of their own choosing over a four-year period.
