What Does Innovation Smell Like? A Conceptual Framework for Analysing and Evaluating DFID-RIU Experiments in Brokering Agricultural Innovation and Development
This paper briefly reviews three conceptual frameworks: namely, the national agricultural research system (NARS), the agricultural knowledge and information system (AKIS) and the agricultural innovation system (AIS) concepts. Next, the paper reviews the definition of ‘innovation’ and proposes that agricultural innovation can occur at four different but interlinked domains.

An Assessment of National Agricultural Innovation Systems in Botswana, Ghana, Kenya and Zambia
This report describes the 2012 NAIS Assessment was piloted in 4 countries: Botswana, Ghana, Kenya and Zambia. Data were collected through a survey questionnaire, open-ended interview questions, and data mining of secondary sources. A team led by a national coordinator took charge of data collection from various partner organizations in each country.

FAO Science and Innovation Strategy
Recent sessions of FAO Governing Bodies have put a strong focus on science, technology and innovation and Members are increasingly requesting FAO’s support to harness science and innovation. The FAO Science and Innovation Strategy (the Strategy) was adopted by the FAO Council at its 170th Session following an inclusive and transparent consultative process, with the participation of all Members through formal sessions of Governing Bodies (including the Regional Conferences in 2022), as well as two informal consultations and informal meetings with Regional Groups.

Trees outside forests module for Regional Rice Initiative Phase II Training Manual
This manual, for FFS facilitators and coordinators, refers to the previous publication and specifies how the topic and practices on trees outside forests can be implemented using the FFS approach. This is accomplished by introducing an adapted AESA and special topics for a four-month FFS growing season. The agroforestry ecosystem analysis (AFESA) includes TOF, production, environmental services, trees, non-trees – bamboos and palms – and shrubs on different types of rice fields in combination with sketch maps and record making.

Le Sénégal à l’instar des autres pays de la zone sahélienne est très vulnérable au changement climatique (CC). Cette vulnérabilité est liée à la dépendance de sa population rurale à une agriculture pluviale fragilisée par de multiples contraintes structurelles, notamment la variabilité interannuelle et inter-saisonnière des précipitations, la baisse de la fertilité des sols et les difficultés d’accès aux intrants et services agricoles (Albert et Springer, 2004).

This training document provides technical facilitators and producers with the tools to develop experimental training in agroecological silvopastoral systems and to sensitize producers in the recognition of the importance of trees and shrub species as integral component of the silvopastoral system. Diagnostic tools are combined with group dynamics, ballot box, fruit salad and plenary discussions, among others, to familiarize participants with the different silvopastoral models and to define main tree and shrub species in the region.

Ce manuel est produit dans le cadre de la mise en œuvre du Projet GCP/MLI/033/LDF "Intégration de la résilience climatique dans la production agricole pour la sécurité alimentaire en milieu rural au Mali". Le projet est exécuté grâce à la facilitation technique de la FAO et le financement du Fonds Mondial pour l’Environnement (FEM). Son objectif est de renforcer les capacités du secteur agricole à faire face au changement climatique en incorporant les préoccupations et les stratégies d’adaptation dans les initiatives de développement agricole au Mali.
