The paper sets out the general concepts and principles of the Agricultural Innovation Systems approach, and its application to agricultural research and development, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. It is intended for those interested in applying new approaches to research with farmers, NGOs and the private sector that lead to developmental outcomes.
This chapter outlines the role of a well-functioning agricultural innovation system in ensuring good use of public funds, and higher responsiveness to the needs of ‘innovation consumers’ through improved collaboration between public and private participants, including across national borders. A well-functioning agricultural innovation system is key to improving the economic, environmental and social performance of the food and agriculture sector.
This chapter analyses the functioning of the Brazilian agricultural innovation system. It discusses the role of the different actors and describes governance mechanisms to define priorities and evaluate performance. It analyses trends in agricultural R&D expenditure and sources of funding, the role of intellectual property protection in fostering knowledge markets, and outlines mechanisms used to facilitate knowledge transfers, including collaboration at the national level and the adoption of innovation at the farm or firm level.

This booklet describes some recent, stand-out innovations and achievements that are the fruits of this future-oriented partnership, fully supported by the Katalyst project. As Katalyst is in its third phase of operations, some of the milestone achievements of the project are reviewed. Some of the most promising and at the same time some of the most challenging areas of future food production are found in the savannas of South America. Integrating cropping, livestock, and forestry in these regions can increase the eco-efficiency of agricultural production. This chapter presents a case study of an integrated crop, livestock, and forestry system in Brazil. The study area is in Goiás State in the Cerrado region, a vast savanna covering almost one quarter of Brazil's land area.
El propósito de este texto es explorar el concepto de sistemas territoriales de agricultura familiar (STAF) en el marco de procesos que promuevan, de manera integrada, iniciativas de desarrollo de nuestros territorios rurales y de fortalecimiento de las agriculturas familiares, en el marco de políticas nacionales articuladas o complementarias entre sí.
Este material tiene como propósito brindar herramientas y recursos para promover y fortalecer los procesos asociativos en el territorio, y está destinado a los equipos técnicos del INTA y también de todas aquellas organizaciones e instituciones que trabajan en la promoción del desarrollo de los agricultores familiares. Ofrece pautas y orientaciones para los grupos asociativos que recién se están conformando y también para aquellos que ya tienen un camino recorrido.
Se espera que este plan sea la hoja de ruta, tanto para los líderes locales, como para los funcionarios de instituciones que apoyan el territorio. Aquí podrán encontrar las prioridades identificadas por los actores y las líneas de acción que se deben seguir para alcanzar los objetivos planteados. No está de más señalar que la puesta en práctica de este plan requiere del esfuerzo mancomunado de todos los actores sociales del territorio, así como de toda la ayuda financiera y técnica que puedan prestar los actores institucionales.
