Thirty years learning to improve rainwater and land management in the Blue Nile basin of Ethiopia
The Nile Basin Development Challenge (Nile BDC) is funded by the CGIAR Challenge Program on Water and Food (CPWF) to improve the resilience of rural livelihoods in the Ethiopian highlands through a landscape approach to rainwater management. The first project of the Program reviewed past research and development experiences with sustainable land and water management in Ethiopia. This brief summarizes key points from the study, which approached the subject from a broadly historical perspective, tracing changes in policies and strategies from the 1970s to the present.

Manual for innovation platform facilitators in Africa. RISING Ethiopia sites
The Africa Research in Sustainable Intensification for the Next Generation (Africa RISING) program, supported by the United States Agency for International Development, aims to create opportunities for smallholder farm households to move out of hunger and poverty through sustainably intensified farming systems that improve food, nutrition, and income security, particularly for women and children, and conserve or enhance the natural resource base.

An innovation story: Irrigated banana value chain development in Ethiopia
This innovation story narrates the experience of Improving Productivity and Market Success (IPMS) project on innovative banana value chain development in Metema district, Amhara, Ethiopia. The project introduced banana production systems in the district for the first time in 2005. IPMS together with the stakeholders provided support along the banana value chain on production, in put supply and marketing.

Improved Productivity and Market Success (IPMS) of Ethiopian Farmers is a five‐year project funded by Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and being implemented by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). The project focuses on the development of new approaches and processes for: development of market oriented agriculture emphasizing marketable commodities; knowledge management; and innovation capacity development.

Bilan spatialisé de la mise en valeur agricole au Sahara algérien
Les grandes exploitations agricoles créées dans le cadre de la loi de mise en valeur agricole de 1983 dans le Sahara algérien étaient vouées à une production céréalière sous pivot. L’objectif était de développer économiquement des régions sahariennes pour partie marginalisées, ainsi que de réduire la dépendance chronique en céréales du pays. L’État a considérablement investi pour équiper ces exploitations agricoles dans le cadre d’un vaste plan de développement rural. Mais trente ans après la parution de la loi, les réalisations demeurent limitées au regard des objectifs initiaux.

Mise en valeur agricole et dynamiques rurales dans le Touat, le Gourara et le Tidikelt (Sahara algérien)
Le Touat-Gourara-Tidikelt est un très vaste espace, qui occupe près du quart la superficie du Sahara algérien. Il fait partie intégrante de la zone la plus aride du monde, aux contraintes naturelles particulièrement difficiles. Cet espace connu comme le « Pays des foggaras » était savamment exploité, depuis plus d’un millénaire, par les oasiens qui profitaient de la dynamique économique impulsée par le commerce transsaharien.

Les petites exploitations agricoles familiales dans les oasis occidentales du Sahara algérien : état et devenir
L’exploitation agricole familiale des oasis occidentales du Sahara algérien évolue dans un contexte de difficultés lié au déclin des ressources en eau (amenée par les galeries des foggaras) au faible revenu tiré de l’agriculture et à la diversification des activités, au profit de celles non agricoles, plus rémunératrices. À ces facteurs s’ajoutent les effets d’une atomisation de la propriété agricole oasienne, due à l’indivision foncière en rapport avec l’accroissement démographique.
